Let Me Tell You About An Elephant
Seriously, I haven’t lost it!
Beliefs
can
hold
you
back!
As humans we are blessed with querying minds with which we can appraise and re appraise situations, but let me tell you a great little piece about an elephant. This represents how a closed, unquestioning mind can often lead to us being kept in psychological shackles of our own doing.
Elephants are one staple to be found in most circuses that still feature animals. You would think that maybe with their hulking size they would be difficult to handle, but it is the understanding of the elephants psyche and false belief systems that makes them extremely easy to manipulate and handle, much like people!
When an elephant is first brought into a circus it tries to escape but is chained by heavy shackles to prevent this. The elephant will keep trying and trying until eventually it loses all hope of escape and comes to the false conclusion that even with it’s size and power, escape is not possible. It is an animal of course. It is not made with a discerning, creative mind or cognitive skills.
Consequently as soon as enough brainwashing has occurred the elephant can be left unchained and it will no longer try to escape.
This is similar to the stories of men who kidnap (or marry!) women or children and brainwash them to the extent that they no longer need to lock the doors to keep them at home. Their kidnapper has given them psychological bondage that is stronger than any physical chain would be.
Isn’t the elephant a metaphor for many of the unproven, unhelpful, false beliefs bashed into our brains?
- You’re too old to do that now.
- A woman over a certain age should cut her hair short.
- A balding paunchy man in his fifties is still sexy, but a woman is just old!
- You’re too young for whatever.
- That person was lucky which is how they became successful, but I’m not a lucky person.
- People like me don’t make lots of money.
- I can’t stop smoking. Nothing works for me.
Is it time you opened up your beliefs and took a good look at them to see if they are holding you back? How?
Stop repeating stuff to yourself that has no foundation in fact or truth. Just because it has been said enough times, or said the loudest or with the most expensive marketing campaign does not make it true! Instead, PROVE IT TO YOURSELF! When Coachie is told she can’t have or do something she founds out whether the claim is rubbish or not. (Here’s a clue: it usually is rubbish!)
If somebody were to ask you a question about a belief you have on any subject, can you answer it with experienced logic and great factual examples? Or can you only parrot what somebody else has told you to believe, giving in to your psychological captors just like the elephant?
